Vale: Associate Professor Jim Manos

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Associate Professor Jim Manos, a passionate advocate for infection prevention and a long-standing supporter of Whiteley’s research at the Charles Perkins Centre, Sydney University.

Jim will be remembered not only for his deep scientific expertise, but also for his unwavering enthusiasm in advancing innovation to improve healthcare outcomes. He was a generous collaborator who encouraged Whiteley’s research at every step, offering thoughtful insights, constructive feedback, and genuine excitement for the breakthroughs being made. His enthusiastic support was particularly felt through his involvement in the Innovative Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre (IMCRC) and CRC-P grants, where he recognised the importance of collaboration between industry and academia and played a vital role in championing their value.

Many will also know Jim for his outstanding contributions in the field of bacterial pathogenesis, where he became a respected expert in cystic fibrosis infections, urinary tract infections, and bacterial biofilms. His journey began with a PhD at UNSW, followed by five years at the University of Maryland, where he investigated bacterial flagellin switching. In 2004, he joined the University of Sydney, building and leading the Bacterial Pathogens Research Group in the Discipline of Infectious Diseases and Immunology, before leading the Infection, Immunity and Inflammation Theme in School of Medical Science.

A dedicated educator, Jim supervised countless PhD, Honours, and Masters students, as well as research staff, and taught across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. He was inducted as a Fellow of The Australian Society for Microbiology (FASM), where he also served as Treasurer and NSW Branch President. His contributions leave a legacy of scientific excellence and mentorship that will continue to inspire future generations.

We are deeply grateful for Jim’s support, his kindness, and his immense contribution to our shared mission. His legacy will live on through the research he championed and the people he inspired.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
