Where do you find biofilm?

EVERYWHERE. Biofilms can be found widely throughout the environment.

  • Teeth – dental plaque
  • In water supplies
  • In air-conditioning units
  • Surfaces in healthcare facilities

Recent research has shown that biofilms appear on dry surfaces as well as wet surfaces. Dry surface biofilms are found on almost all surfaces in a healthcare setting. If we don’t remove a biofilm, we can’t ‘kill’ the microbes which cause infection. This significantly increases the risk of infection, particularly with Clostridium difficile (C.diff) and multi drug resistant organisms Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin – Resistant Enterococci (VRE).

Research

Whiteley has collaborated with multiple universities over the years to advance knowledge and understanding of biofilms and how best to remove them. One of the most recent papers published as a result of this collaboration was – “The effect of disinfectant formulation and organic soil on the efficacy of oxidising disinfectants against biofilms” – Click here to view.
